GIANTS midfielder Dylan Shiel’s blistering start to 2015 has been acknowledged by the coaches, with the 22-year old sitting second in the AFLCA Champion Player of the Year Award.
Shiel led the votes with a perfect 10 in the GIANTS’ round one win over St Kilda - the maximum five votes from each coach - and a strong performance against Melbourne on the weekend earned him another nine votes.
The AFLCA Champion Player of the Year is voted on weekly by both of the senior coaches on a 5,4,3,2,1 basis. Each senior coach votes on their match only and any player suspensions are disregarded.
Against Melbourne at StarTrack Oval in Canberra, Shiel had 26 touches, eight tackles and kicked three goals to pick up nine votes alongside fellow midfielder Stephen Coniglio. Co-captain Callan Ward, midfield star Adam Treloar and ruckman Shane Mumford also earned votes from the coaches in the GIANTS' stunning 45-point win over the Demons.
The week before, Shiel had 28 touches, three tackles and a goal in the club’s nine-point win over St Kilda in round one in a best-on-ground performance.
Shiel’s 19 votes has him sitting second on the leaderboard, just one vote behind Fremantle superstar Nat Fyfe who has collected a perfect 10 in the opening two rounds from the coaches.
